We went to Sturbridge Village, and learned a lot. After we arrived, we were able to walk around the village with our chaperones.

We saw two women farming. We stopped to talk to them and they explained that women worked in the garden with the younger children. They used small branches to help the plants grow tall. We saw the animals and it was also interesting to see where they lived. In our activity we learned about farming in the early years. We made a seed bag and put pumpkin and corn seeds in it. We planted scarlet runner beans in a pot.

When one group went to the printing activity in the education building, we learned that printing was long, hard work. We also learned that to print you needed tiny keys, which were printed one by one. We were able to make our own stereotypes. Our stereotypes were of a person and his dog. We learned that you were wealthy if you had even one book.

Another group went in to learn about children’s games. We played with Jacob Ladders, a twirling toy and tried to catch a ball in a small cup.

We walked more after our activities. We also saw and learned many interesting things. In the bank we learned that they only used coins. We learned that they made the dye for the yarn from sawdust and beetles. When we went to the shoe shop we learned that lots of young men made shoes because it was good pay.

Mrs. Gonzalez’s fourth grade class learned the origin of the Spanish alphabet and the correct pronunciation of each letter. The students learned the alphabet by speaking, reading, listening and writing Spanish vocabulary. Each student made their own alphabet book. Students enjoyed a Spelling Bee contest where the new vocabulary was used.

Last Minute Information…Sturbridge Village

Please arrive at school at 8:00 and report to the dining room. Do not go upstairs.

Our bus will leave promptly at 8:15.

Please call school if your child will be absent. We need to be on time for our activities in Sturbridge and will not hold the bus.

Children should pack a snack, lunch and drink in a small back pack or other easily carried bag. More than likely, each group will decide when and where to eat lunch so they need to carry it with them. Making it a “disposable” lunch will lighten their load for the rest of the day. Individual chaperones will not carry student items.

There are opportunities to purchase souvenirs, but we would like to limit each child to $20 maximum.

Children may bring electronics for the bus ride, but they are responsible for them.

Dress is casual, but sneakers or other closed shoes are required.

Each pair of docents had a group of fourth, fifth, and eighth grade students they took on a tour through the museum, and they engaged in meaningful and insightful conversation about the current exhibits. By focusing on personal interpretation rather than artists’ statements or factual information, the docents were able to cull interesting reflections and commentary from the students through a series of carefully-worded open ended questions. It was the first visit to the Aldrich for many of the students and their first exposure to contemporary art. It was a fantastic morning rich in aesthetic conversation and art appreciation.

Vocabulary Lesson 14- complete page 59…writing due Friday -On a separate piece of paper, write one or two paragraphs that describe a villain featured in a familiar fairy tale. Write your description from the point of view of the villain. Pretend that you are the villain and you do not like the way your character is portrayed in the original tale. Describe the person you really are. in your story, use vocabulary words and underline them.

To start with, we created biography poems with our guests. Then it was off to see our museums and other classrooms around the school. I know everyone enjoyed the delicious snack and the fabulous performances. Our class did a wonderful dance around the May Pole to end the day.
