Fun Friday: Our Vote, Our Game!
Posted by Sarah PollexFun Friday is the BEST part of the week in PE class. Why? Because we get to pick the game by voting. That’s right—we all have a say!
From freeze tag to sink the ship, pinball to bean bag toe touch, students shared their favorite game and the winning choice took over the gym. Once it started, the energy was off the charts! Laughter, cheering, and teamwork were everywhere as we all jumped in and played our hearts out.
Fun Friday isn’t just about games—it’s about making choices, working together, and having a blast while being physically active. We can’t wait to see what game we’ll vote for next week!
Visiting The Ancient And The Modern All In One Day!
Posted by Sarah RaggioRecently, the fifth and sixth graders set out for a field experience at the Peabody Museum in New Haven. When we got to the museum, we split up and the fifth grade went straight to the Mesoamerican exhibit on the second floor. We immediately saw a colossal Olmec head! This is one of the civilizations we talked about in class and we had only seen pictures of their sculptures. After that, we attempted to complete a scavenger hunt of Mesoamerican artifacts that our teacher Mrs. Raggio had provided. We saw things like cups, bowls, and one thing that really surprised us was a vase with a scene on it. The scene was a group of people playing with a rubber ball. That surprised us because we didn’t know that they knew about rubber back then.
As we started to leave, we met up with the sixth graders who were exploring the dinosaur section, so we joined in! We saw skeletons of wooly mammoths and other dinosaurs. One of the skeletons we saw was Lucy, the early hominid. We will learn more about that next year! On the way back to school, we stopped at Modern Apizza to eat some world famous New Haven pizza. It was so good! The trip was both educational and fun!

Stepping Back in Time: 6th Graders Play the Royal Game of Ur
Posted by Thomas IezinTo wrap up our Fertile Crescent unit, our 6th graders took learning into the ancient world! Students had the chance to immerse themselves in Mesopotamian culture by playing one of the oldest known board games in human history — the Royal Game of Ur.
Dating back nearly 5,000 years, this game was discovered in the Royal Tombs of Ur (in present-day Iraq) and gives historians fascinating insight into daily life and recreation in ancient Mesopotamia. Students learned about the rules, strategies, and the historical context of the game before trying it out themselves.
The activity sparked great discussion, laughter, and even a few friendly rivalries — proving that some things never change.
We’re proud of how our 6th graders continue to bring history to life — one ancient roll of the dice at a time.
Teamwork Takes the Field!
Posted by Sarah PollexThe Unquowa field was buzzing with excitement as our 3rd, 4th, and 6th graders kicked off an awesome soccer showdown! The game was packed with quick moves, smart passes, and plenty of cheers from teammates on the sidelines. Both teams played their hearts out and after all that action, the match ended in a thrilling 2–2 tie! Every goal, save, and high-five showed just how much fun teamwork can be. From start to finish, the energy was nonstop-and the Gator spirit was everywhere! Way to play, Gators!
In the Hall of Mountain King!
Posted by David CoeThe 6th grade instrumental ensemble gave a spooky performance of “In The Hall Of The Mountain King” at this morning’s assembly. The class added a touch of “heavy metal” flair with electric guitars and percussion! Nice work, 6th grade!
Founders’ Day Festivities
Posted by kellysullivanUnquowa families, faculty and alumni gathered on the back field to celebrate one of our favorite traditions – Founders’ Day! It was wonderful to see so many alumni back on campus, catching up with classmates and teachers and showing their Unquowa pride throughout the day.
Chef Adam and his amazing team treated everyone to a farm-to-fork feast featuring butternut squash soup, hamburgers and hot dogs, an autumn crunch salad, freshly baked pumpkin bread, and more! The local band Tangled Vine kept the crowd entertained with their lively tunes, and our own Mr. Coe wowed everyone by joining them on guitar for a few songs.
Our 8th graders and their families did a fantastic job running the bake sale, children’s activities, and the 50/50 raffle — all to raise funds for their class trip. Kids had a blast bouncing in the inflatables, painting pumpkins, and playing lawn games, while parent volunteers kept the Community Closet and Gator Goods tent running smoothly.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this special day possible. Days like this remind us just how lucky we are to be part of the Unquowa community!
