While many of you were sleeping in on a sunny Saturday morning, ten of our very talented students were with Mrs. Haseltine at Fairfield University to participate in the Mathcounts Chapter competition.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement by providing creative problems that promote critical thinking skills. Currently in its 29th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country’s largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
Here at Unquowa, Mathcounts has been a part of the mathematics curriculum since 1991. On February 4, after months of preparation, our academic team assembled at Fairfield University for its one opportunity to compete against other local teams.
And compete they did! Eight graders Gwyneth, Hannah and Danny, and seventh graders Grace, Katie, Spencer, Colin, Sydnee, Lily, and Ian worked throughout the morning on the three written components of the competition. We beat 5 other teams, including several large public middle schools, to finish 14th.
The certificates the students received read as follows: This student has successfully represented The Unquowa School in the Mathcounts chapter competition, has demonstrated excellence in mathematics and has proven to be an exceptional student mathlete in both individual and team efforts.
It is a pleasure to work with these talented and enthusiastic students and they have done an outstanding job of representing Unquowa. Congratulations!
