Engineering a Seed
Posted by Carlene GordonThird graders are studying seed adaptations in science. We learned that seeds are designed in nature to travel by wind, water and/or animals. After carefully observing seed properties such as the dandelion’s silk, burs from various plants, and the buoyancy of a coconut, student engineers were sent to the Makerspace. Presented with various materials, their task was to design and then create a seed to travel in one primary way. Upon completion, students shared their designs and wrote about the properties they included to help the seed to not only travel but also germinate.
