Practicing Mindfulness
Posted by Wendy KerrIn Grade 3 we use mindfulness as a tool throughout our day. Brain research tells us that practicing mindfulness improves self-regulation, reduces stress and helps create nonjudgmental awareness of our thoughts, feelings and experiences. Mindfulness can be practiced many ways. So far we have introduced using the breath as an anchor to focus our attention.
We started with a lesson on Mindful Bodies and Mindful Listening. Bryael was our “Mindfulness” leader and rang the chime to begin and finish our “Mindful Minute.” Sawyer was our classroom photographer this week, so photo credit goes to him! The students then reflected on how the mindfulness made them feel in a few words. There was a range… from calm, happy, relaxed, sleepy to frustrated and bored. We discussed just being aware of the full range of emotions and bringing our attention back to the breath. Also, clarifying that there is no one right way to feel. We are simply observing WITHOUT judgement.
