Native American Food
Posted by Janice ShannonCan you guess what the Native Americans who lived around The Unquowa School ate? Of course – fish and other seafood from the brook and from Long Island Sound. Mrs. Shannon brought in a couple examples of local seafood for students to examine including a porgy, a lobster, a couple of clams and some mussels. Mr. Doug was kind enough to come by and show us the insides of the porgy and the lobster – we saw the heart and the stomach but not much else. Students did not want to touch the lobster but the clams and mussels seemed pretty safe to touch. Together, we broke the shells of the clams and mussels with rocks so we could understand how the Native Americans ate from them. Once we were done with the investigation, we enjoyed making a pretty fish print that should remind us of our fun day at school.
