Fantastic Fingerprints
Posted by Maureen DialloThe first graders took a close at the tips of their fingers. “What are those tiny ridges and lines?” they wondered. We pressed a finger onto an inkpad and then onto a piece of paper. We were amazed to see a print of those lines and ridges — a real fingerprint! Your fingerprints are unique. That means that no one else in the world has the exact same set of ridges and lines that you have on your fingers. Not even identical twins have the same fingerprints. Fingerprints also stay the same from the time you’re born until you are old and gray! Their uniqueness and lasting quality make fingerprints one of the best ways to identify a person. Using magnifying glasses and ink, the first graders were able to name the pattern of their fingerprints. They learned that there are three main types of fingerprints, the loop, the arch, and the whorl. Though you may have a similar type of fingerprint as someone else, the pattern will never be the same! After placing their inked finger onto paper, the first graders used their imagination to turn their print into a one-of-a-kind piece of art!
