Peace Corp Presentation
Posted by Ariel WarshawUnquowa Mom and Peace Corp Volunteer, Jessica Gray, recently met with 7th grade Humanities students to talk about her time serving in Niger. Ms. Gray shared video footage from her time living in Baune, a small village outside the border city of Konni just north of Sokoto, Nigeria, from 1995-1997. She showed students what her living quarters looked like, passed around an article she wrote for the Peace Corps during her service, and explained the projects she helped coordinate: village mapping, agroforestry, setting up a youth group, arranging for vaccinations, and more. Our seventh graders had lots of questions for Ms. Gray! They asked about how she learned to speak Hausa, whether she had culture shock upon arrival, if she had any scary moments, if she was still in touch with her “family” and friends in Niger, and lots more! It was a wonderful way to extend our studies of the African continent. Through Ms. Gray’s accounts, the class got to experience the possibility of adventure and the magic of human connection.
