Beyond Origami
Posted by Alice DesGrangesThe fifth-grade class explored practical applications of origami, the centuries-old art of paper folding. Students discovered the innovative uses of origami in science, technology, and architecture. Through a series of delicate folds, the class created mini models of NASA’s golden starshade prototype. The starshade is designed to be sent into space and diffract the glare of starlight as it moves in front of a space telescope. Scientists believe that the shield will allow them to discover new planets and learn more about space. Origami is even in our car! It is the way an airbag is folded so it can fit in a small space and instantly unfold when needed.
