Project FeederWatch
Posted by Mary CurranThe Unquowa School has participated in Project FeederWatch for five years. This winter-long survey of birds is conducted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Volunteer 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders meet each month to count birds at the feeding station located behind The Unquowa School. Binoculars, field guides and tally sheets are provided to assist students in identification and documentation of bird sightings. Tallies are sent to the FeederWatch database to help scientists track winter feeder trends and develop a better understanding of bird populations. Downy woodpeckers, mourning doves, common grackles, blue jays, cardinals, goldfinches, and juncos are among the species of birds that have been identified this year. In January, students were thrilled to also observe two pairs of mallards and a great blue heron in the Horse Tavern Brook!
