Undersea Adventures!
Posted by Fiona EckersleyThis month our science and social studies unit is all about oceans and the wonders they contain. We have looked at the different levels of the oceans and the wide variety of creatures that live in each. This week our friends learned about the huge kelp “forests” off the coast of California. We imagined being lost in there and how we would find our way out! We even tasted some seaweed ….some of us loved it, some did not. The kelp can grow as much as 18 inches a day and can end up as long as 2000 feet. Most though are around 50 feet.
How high up IS 50 feet? So that we could get a sense of that we tied six helium balloons on to a 50 foot length of string and took it out to the field to let it rise. The class pretended to be fish swimming and we followed our “kelp” strand as it moved around in the air.
“It’s taller than the school.”
“It’s higher than the trees.”
“I can’t jump up that high.”
