Just a Fraction of What We Do…
Posted by Cameron Ross-MacCormackI designed this lesson as a way to help my kinesthetic second graders build on their existing knowledge by designing their own way to show the numerical relationships we call fractions. Students marked geometric shapes with 1cm cubes and labeled the fraction shown. Multiple perspectives and sensory pathways through which students give, receive and store information were engaged during this exercise. Consequently it affirmed multiple lenses and learning styles. The simultaneous use of tangible objects and written numerals demanded left and right brain collaboration, combining concrete and abstract critical thinking…and it felt so good, we did it almost all class!
