Pop Art Inspired Portraits
Posted by Krissy PondenHave you ever imagined yourself as a character in a comic book? The seventh grade has been transforming themselves into literal works of art by creating self-portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. One of the leading artists of the pop art movement, Lichtenstein’s work is characterized by comedic irreverence and large-scale replicas of old comic book frames taken out of context. The students looked at several of Lichtenstein’s most famous works, including Drowning Girl, to note the hard black lines and ubiquitous Ben-Day dots that Lichtenstein faithfully enlarged to exaggerate the rough quality of early printing processes. They then posed for photographs of themselves in particular situations and traced their outlines to capture the scene. The fun part was coming up with a thought or exclamation that added humor or intrigue to the comic. The students used black markers to outline their images and a limited palette of blue, yellow, and red to paint. Stay tuned for their finished projects!
