Using Hand Signs in Music Class
Posted by Megan KirkIn all music classes at The Unquowa School, students sing using solfege. Not only can you sing solfege, but you can sign it as well. First graders have been working on their hand signs while singing. First I sing and sign a short example, then students repeat that back to me using their voices and hands. Next I would just show them the signs, as they “sang” what I was showing silently in their heads. Then they would repeat this short example with both singing and signing. This method of “hearing” the music while it is being signed is one of the first steps in a solid foundation to sight singing.
