It was a rainy day for our annual May Day Celebration with Grandparents and Special Friends. However, the students brought sunshine into the lives of everyone during their class performances at our very special assembly. Each class worked very hard on their pieces for this assembly and all of that hard work paid off in an extra special assembly full of music and dance.
PreK-3 is a small class, but you wouldn’t notice that by just listening! Our youngest students were clearly comfortable on stage and their performance of I’ve Got No Strings, complete with dance moves, started the show with a bang.
Recently, the PreK-4 and kindergarten classes learned to tap dance in movement class, and all year they’ve been working on their expression while performing. The students were very proud of their performance of Singing in the Rain – particularly the part where they showed off their soft shoe skills!
In first grade students absolutely fell in love with the song Put a Little Love in Your Heart and choreographed their own dance for the assembly – the energy on stage was wonderful!
Second graders have been talking a lot in class about what music means to them. In their song, Don’t Stop the Music, the first verse speaks about how important music is in our lives. The second graders then created and sang their own lyrics for the second verse using all of their ideas from our class discussions.
Third and fourth graders came together to sing I am a Small Part of the World. This is the first time I’ve had students this age singing harmonies. They learned all about different intervals and why some notes sound good together and some do not. We worked very hard on these harmonies and highlighted this hard work by signing them A Capella during the last chorus of the song. The kids also came up with the idea of adding sign language to their song. We researched this together and put sign language to the chorus of this piece. It was beautiful to both hear and see.
Fifth grade students selected the song, Best Day of My Life. After listening to the song together, and teaching them all of the different parts, I put it in the students’ hands. They worked on deciding which groups would sing which parts and how the song would sound best. I was very proud of these fifth graders for taking charge and working together to create this wonderful performance.
Sixth through eighth grade showed off both their guitar and musical theater skills brilliantly. Each guitar class played two songs to show their ability to play many styles of music. Then, students performed the first number from our upcoming spring musical, Seussical, Jr. It was an energetic and exciting number – we are all excited for next week’s show!
As always, the grand finale was the Maypole Dance. Fourth grade students performed the Barber’s Pole Weave and then fifth graders performed both the Spider Weave and the Braid Weave. In order for a successful weave, students must be focused and work together as a team. It was a great success!
