An Autumn Trip to the Audubon
Posted by Carlene GordonThird and fourth graders spent the day at the Audubon in Fairfield recently investigating rocks and minerals. We began our day inside creating “human”rocks and minerals. Once we were certain of how these two substances are created, we opened our tool kits and tried to identify various rocks. We tested luster, streak, color and hardness and then searched field guides for the name and type of rock. Later we embarked on a nearly two hour hike through the beautiful trails at the Audubon. We stopped along the way to listen to bird calls, observe nests and of course, identify some more rocks. Students hypothesized as to how various rocks were formed, why these they be splitting and looked for signs to rocks peeking out from far beneath the surface.
