Are You a Good Fish or a Bad Fish? I’m Not a Fish At All, cried Dorothy…
Posted by Craig KnebelI am a crayfish. Well, I think the line in the movie sounded something like that. The seventh graders have been studying genetics and predicting traits with Punnett Squares. The XY boy chromosome crosses with XX girl chromosomes and our prediction is for children to be 50% of each. Does this ratio hold for other animals? Justin Ficaro of Elite Aquariums led our students through a sex typing and length measurement of our crayfish to judge if the crayfish population in our brook tank is 50% boys and 50% girls. We will revisit the tank in 40 days to note any change in the “mudbug” population.
