Black Swallowtail Butterflies Emerge
Posted by Mary CurranFor the third year in a row, kindergartners have discovered Black Swallowtail caterpillars in the Unquowa Garden. Last fall, students collected 8 caterpillars munching on the carrots and parsley and placed them in a glass tank for observation. The caterpillars quickly formed chrysalises and spent the winter in a phase called diapause. This spring kindergartners made predictions as to how many butterflies would hatch from their chrysalises. To date, 5 butterflies have emerged and been successfully released in the garden!
