Blowing Away Our Worries
Posted by Faith BarbutoDuring our recent professional development day, I visited Chatsworth School in Larchmont to see their mindfulness practices in action. While the teacher was doing a breathing exercise with her kindergarten class, I got the idea to use bubbles to demonstrate breathing in and blowing out. I took the class outside and told them to think of something that worried them while they inhaled and then blow that thought out into a bubble. Then we watched as our worries floated away or were popped by helpful classmates. The things students fretted about started as typical childhood fears: getting dirty, heights, spiders. Then as we delved deeper they revealed more personal worries and we all felt better watching them float away. Their responses really “blew” me away and reminded me of just how important these mindfulness activities are.
