Ceramic Bird Houses
Posted by lauradowlingIn art class this term, sixth grade students have been enthusiastically working with white stoneware clay to create birdhouses. The birdhouses were built using the coil technique, which is a type of hand building. Each student began by rolling a ball of clay and flattening it to create a slab base. Coils of clay are then rolled, coiled and then fused on top of the base. An additional slab is added to the top and then the entire piece is fused and smoothed out using clay tools and water. Some students chose to add additional decorative touches. The finished greenware pieces will be bisque fired, glazed, then finally glaze fired. I’m so impressed with the children’s progress so far- they were so successful in building these beautifully artistic & organic pieces that will be irresistible to birds come spring!
