Changing the Narrative
Posted by Faith BarbutoInspired by books about famous women in history and all the strong, powerful females in our lives, the budding Pre-K authors spent the month of March reexamining and revising some fairy tales. With the help of our 5th grade reading buddies, first we read the story of Rapunzel and used our engineering minds to invent ways she could save herself from the tower. Answers were pragmatic and creative, ranging from a rope to a parachute to a jackhammer! Next, we took on the story of the Princess and the Pea. That old tale could really use some work, but fortunately, there are lots of new versions that change the story to make it more fair and show that princesses can be more than just a tiara. How about a princess who is a car mechanic, or one who dreams of opening her own pizza shop, or even a character named Princess who wins a contest for cooking black-eyed peas! We also took a closer look at what makes a good princess, or a good person, for that matter, learning the important lesson that what is inside matters more than what is on the outside.
