Current Events Connect Us
Posted by Debbie LeidleinWhile 7A is studying the United Kingdom, and 7B is studying China, a recent current event has connected these two geography classes. The recent protests by students in Hong Kong was discussed by both classes. Through reading articles and watching news videos students learned that Hong Kong, once a British colony, was recently returned to China and that students were protesting for a more democratic form of government in which they had more of a voice in deciding who their leaders would be. Students researched the history of Hong Kong, the government of China and the similar protest in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Their findings were then presented to the class using Google Sheets and focusing on the qualities of a good oral presentation. Students have all remarked on how these presentations have given them a stronger appreciation for the rights we enjoy as Americans.
