Discovering Fossils
Posted by Carlene GordonAt the end of our study of rocks and minerals, third graders discovered that fossils are found in sedimentary rock more than any other kind of rock. We discovered that a fossil is not only the remains of plants or animals from long ago but can also be made from tracks and other evidence of life. Students learned that mold fossils are made from the shape of a plant or animal and a cast fossil is when the mold gets filled with sediment or minerals. To conclude our study, we went into the makerspace to make mold and then cast fossils out of clay and plaster of Paris.
