Earth’s Natural Resources
Posted by Karen EngelkeSecond Grade has been studying earth’s natural resources in Science and have been exploring renewable resources and non renewable resources. Trees, although identified as a natural resource, were the source of an interesting conversation. We discussed how, in the case of trees, humans take more of this natural resource than nature can provide. To illustrate this dilemma we conducted an activity with pretzel sticks serving as trees. During each round, the protector of trees planted four trees from their source. The lumberjack doubled the number of trees they ‘cut down’ in each round, starting with one. After 8-12 rounds, the 2nd graders observed that the trees were quickly consumed.
