Exploring Gender Stereotypes – The Work of One Cluster
Posted by Faith BarbutoWhen you were born, what was the first thing that anyone said about you? For me, although I certainly do not remember it, it was a doctor joyfully proclaiming, “It’s a girl!” Have you stopped and thought about how that one statement has defined the rest of your life? In our cluster, we have been examining gender stereotypes with the hope of erasing them from our community. Before our initial meeting, those of us planning the cluster were so curious, why did these students chose this theme, what about it interests them? So we began our cluster work with an anonymous survey to gage what drew the members to this cluster and how the they feel about gender stereotypes. After we analyzed the results from our own internal survey, we created a survey to send out to our school community. We learned that many of us feel that there are still gender biases affecting us every day. Our next goal is do some social experiments to see what happens when people step outside of gender norms. We are thinking of creating a short movie to illustrate exactly how incorrect these gender stereotypes can be but as is the beauty of clusters, our goals are evolving as we do.
