Figurative Sculpture
Posted by lauradowlingOver the past several weeks, seventh and eighth graders have been hard at work building figurative sculptures using recycled materials and Paris Craft. We began by taking a brief look at the figure in art history, beginning with the earliest known figurative sculpture which dates back to 25,000 B.C. I encouraged students to think about how artists represented the figure historically, and to focus on proportion and gesture when building their own sculptures. They worked creatively – some chose to work abstractly and some chose a more realistic approach. Armatures were built using wire, newspaper, tape and wood, and were finished with a coat of plaster infused gauze. The finished pieces will finally be painted to resemble cast bronze sculptures.
