The 7th grade has stepped back in time and started learning about Earth’s history, from the formation of our planet 5 billion years ago until present day and all of the organisms that have inhabited this home throughout time! In this activity, students demonstrated their knowledge on the process of fossilization by creating comics or flipbooks. These stories were illustrating an organism (either a plant or animal) going from a living being to fossilized remains and the process that was responsible for the fossilization. The students then explained whether the process was uniformitarianism (a slow gradual process such as a wind or water erosion, soil deposition, etc.) or Catastrophism (a fast change such as a volcanic eruption or wildfire). By the end of the exercise, the students had a greater understanding of the fossilization process and how the environment can completely change over-time.
