Investigating Bone Strength
Posted by Carlene GordonWhat makes bones strong? Fourth graders discovered the answer to this question is CALCIUM! Students observed fresh chicken bones and made note the the hardness. Then soaked them in vinegar for over two weeks to take out some of the calcium. Students then made new observations. We found that after two weeks the bones had become very soft and bendable. Students concluded that calcium is very important to bone strength. Upon further research we discovered the many calcium rich foods available to us at The Unquowa School every day including not only milk and cheese, but also kale, collard greens and broccoli.
