Journey to Oaxaca
Posted by Krissy PondenThe fifth grade has been learning about the folk art of Oaxaca, Mexico, a region known for its rich culture and vibrantly colorful crafts. We created radial designs in metal tooling foil in the style of the intricate tin mirrors that are famous in the area; the students then painted beautiful frames to complement their designs. We also studied the work of Josefina Aguilar, an artisan who creates detailed clay figures called market women. Using ceramic techniques similar to Josefina’s, the students sculpted their own figures and added intricate elements such braids and baskets. The figures were fired in the kiln and then painted and glazed in bright colors. Be sure to stop by our Mexican folk art exhibit in the student art show in May!
