Making (Awesome) Music in the Makerspace
Posted by Megan KirkIt was an interesting day in music class. We have been talking a lot about beat and rhythm. The students had been using our classroom instruments to create different rhythmic patterns when we decided to take a trip to the makerspace to experiment. The students used the power drills, hammers, foam blocks and even the carpet pieces to make really interesting sounds and rhythms. We talked about how working as a team and using these “instruments” made it possible to create wonderful music! Each group of students had a different tool to use as their mode for creating a set rhythm. Then we built upon each group by adding the other tools, layering the rhythms on top of one another. Sometimes the sound was too loud and did not work well together, while other times the sounds really complimented each other and the rhythm and music we were making sounded really cool! We discussed the difference in why sometimes the music “worked” and sometimes it didn’t. We then related that back to the music classroom and how we always have to work together as a unit and support one another to create the best music we can.
