March Winds
Posted by Faith BarbutoIn what has become an annual March tradition, the kindergarten and fifth grade students paired up for an engineering project where they created their own windmills. Each year, we give the students less and less guiding information and are always amazed at how creative their ideas are. This year, we only showed them the materials and told them to create a windmill with sails that will catch the wind well enough to lift a weighted cup. The ideas were amazing, although some were definitely more effective than others. Next we began to test our designs, sometimes requiring a trip back to the drawing board to make alterations. It is a pleasure to watch them work cooperatively, share ideas and troubleshoot problems. The look in their eyes when that windmill first starts to spin is just magic!
