Mining Resources
Posted by Carlene Gordon(On Crazy Hat Day) Third graders were given a challenge in science class. Students were given a chocolate chip cookie, an eye dropper, water and toothpicks and asked to remove as many chocolate chips as possible with minimal damage to the cookie. Although students eagerly and confidently began, they soon realized what a daunting task this was. Cookies crumbled and melted with the water. A few students were actually able to successfully mine several chips but were left with large holes in their cookie. Afterwards, through class discussion, third graders made the connection between mining natural resources from earth and the damage humans’ over-zealous mining may cause. Next we will work on possible solutions…
