Question Is, Why Don’t We Know As Much About Indigenous Cultures?
Posted by Trésor KayumbaOur 5th Grade scholars visited Fairfield Museum & History Center lead by the highly knowledgeable, Walt. In our visit we learned about the traditions of The Unquowa, Sasquua, Pequannock, and Paugussett Algonquin peoples before the arrival of the Europeans. Students had the opportunity to learn the concept of stewardship of the land and about the various tools indigenous groups used on a daily basis.
We reflected about cultures, how people keep tradition and the different methods we use to pass information. We also spoke about erasure, and its impact on what we know now and what is at stake because of it.
We understand that we have a responsibility to educate ourselves about people’s history. We do this in order to better understand our role within society and how to improve it.
