Reading a Score
Posted by Megan KirkStudents in fourth grade are working on how to read a musical score. First, students took a few minutes to analyze a piece of music given to them just by the way it looked. “There are groups of three lines,” “there is Soprano on the top line, then two lines that say Alto,” “there is a space between each group of three lines,” were some of the observations from the class. Students learned that unlike reading a paragraph, you do not always follow to the line directly below you while reading music – if there is more than one part written, then you must stay reading only that line as you go through the piece! Students began reading this score by first reading each part on its own. We then separated into three groups, and played each line on our instruments. Then it was time to put it all together! We all read this score, but only read the line we were assigned to. The result – three parts coming together to create one piece of music!
