Research Scientists
Posted by Mary FaulknerWhy is it important for scientists to only use reliable information that has been reviewed by other scientists? How does one discern if a source is reliable in the first place? This was one of the initial topics of inquiry discussed and investigated in fifth grade science class. After looking at various sources available through internet searches, students realized that the best sources will come from sites that are supported by other scientists. Also, the best research reports will be those done multiple times by many experts in a field of study. To put their new found knowledge to the test, students were asked to do a simple research project of their own. They were to research and gather information, from a reputable source, about a deep sea creature of their choosing. As they were conducting their research such things could be heard like, “A caption under an image is not reliable” and “This article is great because it was written by a scientists and is on National Geographic for Kids!” Students then took the facts they found about their specific creatures, designed posters and presented their findings to the class.
