Rousing Rhetoric
Posted by Alice LloydThe eighth grade public speaking series began in assembly last week with Walter’s speech about his lifelong love of sailing, and they continue next week with Clara’s speech about learning to appreciate cultural differences.
Alongside the preparation of their speech drafts, the eighth graders have been studying powerful speeches in English class. They’ve also incorporated some stirring performances into their study! The idea behind this playacting is that if they experience the power of a speech by giving a passionate dramatic reading, they will know it more deeply than if they limit their study to the words on the page.
- Hannah, Garrett and Lexi act out Susan B. Anthony’s arrest for voting in the 1872 presidential election and her famous speech Are Women Persons?
- “It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union.” Rachel and Mary take turns reading Susan B. Anthony’s most rousing lines.
