Sport Hill Farm
Posted by Carlene GordonThird graders recently travelled to Sport Hill Farm in Easton. Patti Pop explained fall events on the farm including harvesting the last crops of the season, the effects of the colder weather and the struggles and rewards of organic farming. After a tour of the the fields, students picked kale to bring back to Unquowa for lunch. Our visit concluded with the students feeding some very happy chickens! Back at Unquowa, Chef Jessica lead a demonstration in kale salad preparation. She explained to the children that rubbing cooking oil into the leaves helps to soften them and discussed the many variations of preparing this hearty vegetable. Finally all of the students were able to try the freshly harvested kale. Many were surprised at how much they enjoyed it and were proud to serve it to their fellow Unquowa students at lunch that day.
