Student Docents at The Aldrich
Posted by Krissy PondenAfter four weeks of training to be docents, on Friday, December 6, students in 8A led tours of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum to their peers in grades 6, 7, and 8. The docents asked a series of open-ended questions to guide the students to explore their own opinions of the artwork and discover the possible meanings behind the artists’ intentions. Starting with an investigative line of questioning such as, “What do you see?” the docents elicited conversation that addressed the overall theme of the current exhibition, Music. Installations as varied as Sol LeWitt’s The Music Collection and Martin Creed’s Scales offered a platform for discussion of how sound influences art and is incorporated into our everyday lives. In addition, the students participated in a drawing activity that asked them to listen to different musical compositions and sketch what they heard. This further helped solidify the connection between art and music and expanded the students’ perceptions of how artists find inspiration for their work. It was a wonderful day and a great example of Unquowa’s partnership with The Aldrich enriching the lives of our students. We are looking forward to the spring, when students in 8B will complete their training to be docents and lead tours for the 4th and 5th graders.
