The Halfway Point
Posted by Sarah RaggioWe are about halfway through our book, My Brother Sam Is Dead, so it is a great time to review what has happened so far in our book. We are learning about reading strategies this trimester and one we recently discussed was stopping to think about what we know so far. As readers, we often just plow through books, turning page after page without stopping to consider, what happened? Why did this happen ? What do I think about the characters? How can I relate to them? Can I picture this story in my head? We are learning that it is important to just pause and give yourself time to think.
In class, we read a summary of each of the six chapters we have read so far. We got into groups and for fun, we chose a chapter to act out. Some of the groups wrote detailed scripts with each student playing several roles, and some groups made props to support their performance. Some groups even had appropriate sound effects to accompany their actions! We had a few simple costumes and it was just fun to find another creative way to connect with our book and check in on the action.
Speaking of halfway, the Yogibo cover is coming along nicely. The students are really enjoying sewing on the very old sewing machine! I am really impressed with their curiosity and patience. Many of them have never sewn on a machine and really have an interest. Maybe sewing machine sales are about to surge in our area? Stay tuned for the final product!
