“The Seven Commandments”
Posted by Iman RastiDuring our study of the government, our eighth grade humanities students read Animal Farm, by George Orwell, focusing particularly on the themes of leadership, power, and forms of government. To further their understanding of these themes, the students were given the task of illustrating one of ‘The Seven Commandments of Animalism’, introduced by Orwell alluding to the Exodus Commandments. Having completed their illustrations in small groups, each group then presented the analysis of their work to the class. The meaningful and organic contributions of the rest of the students to each group’s presentation created a highly rich, student-led discussion around the topics. The students will be writing a literary analysis essay to complement their in-depth study of this literary masterpiece and our study of the government.
