Seventh graders are currently traveling throughout Peru and acquainting themselves with a few of the almost 500 dishes that Peru boasts. To help them on their way, we have sampled chicha morada, a drink containing purple corn that dates back to the time of the Incas. We had mixed reviews on this distinct flavor; some students asked for more and some didn’t finish their first sample. To help students begin to master a variety of food vocabulary, we resorted to the classic game “Going on a Picnic.” This tactic not only incited their competitive spirit, but also allowed them to practice their vocabulary and test their memories.
