Weaving Textures, Patterns, and Mindfulness
Posted by Krissy PondenSixth graders have been learning how to weave on a loom, a skill practiced for millenia by communities around the world. We looked at how weaving was one of the earliest art forms borne out of necessity and how it evolved to be a symbol of culture and identity. We also considered the concept of “women’s work,” why fiber arts have traditionally been relegated to the domestic sphere, and how contemporary artists are redefining the medium. Students designed their own patterns and learned techniques such as the soumak weave, weft interlacing, and adding tassels. During the process, we also found ourselves marveling at how weaving can be a form of mindfulness as the class periods quickly flew by while students were engaged in their work.
