Students in chorus sing such a variety of music, ranging from classical to pop to folk music, and everything in between. We discuss where all of our music comes from, but what does it take to compose a song? We did some research this week on songwriters and different techniques for song and lyric writing. In one of the tutorials on songwriting, Jeff Burton tells how “Language has a rhythm and a melody of its own.” He also gave the tip that when you are stuck writing lyrics, sometimes beginning with the end is a great way to start! Students then looked at some books of other famous singer/songwriters and compiled information on their techniques. Throughout the year students will continue to use this information to enhance their understanding of our music, and will eventually write their own!
