Black Swallowtail Butterflies
Posted by Mary CurranLast fall, kindergartners collected Black Swallowtail caterpillars that were munching on the carrots and parsley in the garden. The caterpillars were put into a glass tank for observation and quickly formed chrysalises. After spending the winter in an outdoor shed in a phase called diapause, they returned to the Science Explorations Room. Kindergartners made predictions as to how many butterflies would hatch from their chrysalises. To date, 8 beautiful Black Swallowtail butterflies have emerged and been successfully released in the Unquowa Butterfly Garden.
