American Imperialism through Primary Sources
Posted by Ariel WarshawEighth grade Humanities students have finally entered the 20th century by learning about American Imperialism. After considering what the word “imperialism” means, and why America pursued this policy – expansion of markets, more consumers, protecting American interests, etc – the students engaged with 15 different stations around the room. At each “stop”, they found a political cartoon, quote, government document, or other primary source from the time period, and responded to questions about them. The students considered symbolism, tone, ulterior motives, and more as they analyzed each source. It was a great way to kick off our understanding of the time period, get moving around the room, and think critically about the United States’ foreign policy motivations.
