Art Criticism: What’s the Message?
Posted by Krissy PondenSeventh and eighth graders have been researching and interpreting works of art by contemporary artists and sharing their presentations with their classes. Following a modified version of the steps professional critics use to evaluate works of art, the students learned how to describe the work, interpret it, and then evaluate whether the artist achieved their goal. This required research into the historical and social context the pieces referenced or what was going on at the time they were created, which helped students determine the message that the artist was trying to convey. This overview of various artists exposed the students to different media and ways of making art as well as social, environmental, and cultural topics that may inspire them when we begin working on Voices of Change in the coming months!
