Connecticut Audubon
Posted by Carlene GordonOur third and fourth graders spent a day studying weather and climate at the Connecticut Audubon. We started with a brief review of the definition of weather and climate and discussed changes in both. Once outside, students used compasses to record the sun’s position in the morning sky. We then enjoyed a long hike on the outdoor trails where students became meteorologists. In three different habitats (meadow, swamp and forest) students used probes and mini-field computers to measure air and soil temperature, rain gauges to measure recent precipitation and anemometers to measure wind speed. Calculations were carefully recorded in field journals. At the end of our hike, we enjoyed lunch outside and a tour of the bird sanctuary. Our visit concluded with a second compass reading of the sun’s position in the now afternoon sky and final weather recordings on the parking lot, demonstrating the change in temperature near man-made surfaces.
