Earth Moves
Posted by Carlene GordonIn fourth grade science, we have been studying patterns and movements of our Earth within the solar system. To engage students, we presented two questions: Why do we have seasons and what causes day and night. Students were told they would find the answer using two globes, two cups and a light bulb. Student volunteers marked where we are in the Northern Hemisphere. Then students were left to investigate. With guiding questions, trial and error, excellent queries as to Earth’s proximity to the sun, diagrams on the board and finding just the right tilt of the Earth’s axis, a solution was finally found. In the end, students determined that the revolution of Earth around the sun in an elliptical pattern of orbit combined with the tilt of the axis are the reasons behind our seasons while the rotation of Earth on its axis provides us with day and night. Well done, scientists!
