Exploring the “American Dream”
Posted by Ariel Warshaw8th graders kicked off their year in Humanities by considering the notion of the “American Dream.” What does that fabled phrase mean? Does it even exist? If it does… is that dream attainable for all? What does it mean to be an American to begin with?
Students listened to testimonies from those who had immigrated to the US, and also read Frederick Douglass’s, “What to the Slave is the 4th of July?” These resources deepened their understanding of who is and isn’t included in this American Dream. They were then asked to explore these questions further within small groups, where they mapped out their thinking on chart paper. It is through these themes that we start our exploration of US foundational documents and post-Revolutionary history, and we will revisit these questions throughout the year!
