Exquisite Corpse: A Surrealist Drawing Game
Posted by Krissy PondenFor a special Halloween treat, sixth grade students played the Exquisite Corpse game in visual arts. The Surrealists, including André Breton, Man Ray, and Joan Miró, invented the game as a collaborative exercise to produce unique, unusual images of composite figures. After folding a sheet of paper in thirds, the students drew a head on the top third. They then extended the lines just slightly onto the next third, concealed what they drew, and passed it to the next person who drew a torso and arms. Finally, the sheet was flipped once more and the last participant drew legs. It’s clear our students have ghouls and goblins on the brain, and everyone enjoyed this fast-paced and surprising game!
